Minister for Police and Emergency Services
Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development
Member for Molonglo
Simon Corbell MLA has represented the Canberra community as a member for Molonglo since 1997 and has been a Minister in the Stanhope and Gallagher Labor Government since it was elected in November 2001.
Simon grew up in Weston Creek. attending the local primary and high school before studying at the University of Canberra where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. Simon lives in Weston Creek with his family and enjoys spending time in local parks and nature reserves, especially bushwalking in the Mt Taylor Nature Reserve.
Currently, Simon is responsible for the important portfolios of Attorney General, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development and Minister for Police and Emergency Services. One of Simon’s biggest passions is creating a fair and sustainable future for Canberra, and making sure that future generations of Canberrans have access to a city that meets the needs of a growing population, but in a way that doesn’t damage our ‘bush capital’ lifestyle.
Simon’s vision is to make Canberra Australia’s solar capital and has succeeded in promoting the benefits of renewable energy in the community through a nation leading feed-in tariff and securing significant industry interest in the roll-out of a large scale solar facility that could power more than 10,000 Canberra homes.
Simon also strongly believes that Canberra is one of the safest places to live and visit in Australia. Under Simon’s leadership, the ACT Labor Government has successfully passed the biggest suite of reforms to liquor laws in more than 30 years, aimed at making our vibrant entertainment precincts safer, and reducing alcohol related violence. Under Simon’s watch the ACT has seen 175 more police recruits since July 1, 2007, and has delivered on a promise to take the Gungahlin police station to a 24/7 operation.
Millions of dollars of Government funding has also been secured by Simon to upgrade Emergency Service equipment, vehicles and sheds across the ACT.
Simon’s passion for planning is evident in all corners of the Territory with particular achievements in the development of the Gungahlin Town Centre, the Kingston Foreshore Project and projects to improve the look and feel of our many town centres, particularly Civic.
Simon is a strong advocate for the development of public transport infrastructure in Canberra. He is using his experience as Planning Minister and his current portfolio for the Environment to encourage people to get out of their cars and onto buses, or on their bikes, which would see Canberra emit less greenhouse gases and become more environmentally friendly city.
Simon has, during his time as a member, also held the portfolios of Minister for Education, Youth and Family Services, Minister for Health and Minister for Industrial Relations.
In his time outside the of the Assembly, Simon enjoys time with his children and family, cycling, running, reading and also volunteers with his local ACT Rural Fire brigade.
